Here we had the challenging task, to adapt, modify and reconceptualize the facade and the outdoor area of a Hotel, part of a larger complex of hotels and villas, located on the beachfront of Drymades.
Working on a existing project from Tombazis & Associates Architects, we had to design conform a structual grid which was already under construction. Taking inspiration from the beautyfull and serene landscape and the traditional mediterranean architecture surrounding the area, we strived to make our archi- tecture fit into the context wthout dominating it. Our approach here was to make the entire architectural structure and patio layout geometrically clean and break up the masive proportions of the existing proposal, which contrasted starkly with the surrounding environment and the fabric and dimensions of the local village.
We approached this task by breakinbg up the vertical continuity of the levels, using cantileverd balconies on the first and second floor, thus emphasizing the horizontal proportions of the building, which helps the structure blend with the landscape.
By outlining every balcony using well proportioned chitectural details and different materials, we made thus every room a distinguishable part of the mosaic that com- prises the building.
We strived to make our architectural product, sincere and faithful to the local building tradition, by translating the dif- ferent functions in to the material palette of the facade. The balconies attached to the rooms and the upper floor where the suites are located, are all clad in wooden planks, giving a sense of warmth and nature. While the public area where the lobby, restaurant and SPA are located, is clad in flagstone giving a stronger and heavier weight to the composition uppon which the upper floors seem to float.
In designing the confined landscape around the hotel, we used the same principles, by using different local materials,
textures and height differences to distinguish different areas, like the pool, lounge, bar and outdoor restaurant.
